Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the small city of Modesto California during a walk home from school one day. I had spotted it's "family" on a daily basis and constantly wanted to capture it. I used to be embaressed to squat down and photogrpah anythinng in front of others, but getting out of my comfort zone has allowed me to capture many beautiful things. Modesto has a more negative reputaion, so finding something beautiful in it was a treasure.

Time

I took this little classic around 3pm on a weekday. I had gotten out of school not long before and I was excited to reach the checkpoint I called a haven. This flower in particular stuck out to me, because of how tall it stood and how boldly it presented itself.

Lighting

I wanted the flower's bold personality to be spotlighted in this photo. As you can see it was already a bit distant from the others, so with my camera on macro I managed to zero in. I attempted to adjust the exposure, but I discover using natural lighting for this photo was the best option; which is another reason I adore this one as much as I do.

Equipment

I used one of my older cameras. I used my Canon Powershot IS 12x optical zoom. I had my doubts about using it since it only has 5megapixels, but I was shocked and have used it for many of my other photos as well.

Inspiration

I personally adore flowers, but just nature in general. My ultimate goal as a photographer is to capture the beauty that is passed up in everyday life; I wanna catch it from an uncommon persepctive, one you might better appreciate it from.

Editing

I actually dont do much post-processing only because I get the lighing and vibrancy in the photo as I'm taking it. I appreciate the photo as long as it truthfully represents the actual object being photogrpahed.

In my camera bag

I find it rather humiliating that my favorite camera at the moment is my old grandma camera; or you may know her as the Canon Powershot Is with 12x optical zoom. I do use other cameras from time to time, but I appreciate the challenge of capturing beauty with a hunk of technology as simple as the piece I own. I also like using the IPhone 6 camera. I've noticed it's not always the camera we use that defines the quality of our photos.

Feedback

If you're trying to catch anything that can only sway in the wind, somehting that can only live and be, then I suggest getting your knees dirty, and maybe even your elbows. I love staring at the object from very odd angles, and from its every aspect. You never know what kind of art will be the product of dirty knees. Use different settings such as changing the exposure, using macro, using auto, landscape, etc. The simplest cameras and the most basic settings can stil produce something beautiful.
