Behind The Lens

Location

Wales, UK

Time

I was hiking early morning in the great country side of Bristol, UK when I noticed the river had a unique waterfall step. I had to cross the river and hike back about 200 meters to get to a spot where I could capture the edge of the steps as well as the river itself. Balancing on the slippery rocks and shooting handheld was a difficult task, but after a few attempts I managed to get the shot. Definitely worth the extra effort.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the reflection of the trees in the water while at the same time I wanted to slow the shutter speed to create a smooth waterfall effect. To get a steady shot at a slow shutter speed without a tripod available, I had to balance myself on the rocks while leaning against a tree behind me. It took a few attempts to get the shot.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark 3 with a Canon 24mm-105mm lens at f/20, and a shutter speed of 3/10.

Inspiration

I travel the world a lot and my friends always praise my pictures from abroad. The conversations we have always made me feel that somehow, the locals did not appreciate the beautiful nature we have in the UK. This inspired me to spend a month exploring different hiking locations closer to home.

Editing

Other than the basic color-correction on Lightroom 5 there wasn't editing. I prefer to leave my images as they are from the camera. I always shoot in RAW and my typical workflow in Lightroom begins with bringing the highlights down to -100, the shadows up to +100. From there I use the option/alt key on my Macbook Pro to adjust my white, and black points. The next phase is to add a bit of clarity and vibrance. I finish off my color correction by sharpening my images to around 60-70, and adjusting the white balance using a gray card.

In my camera bag

Although I have a number of different camera bodies and lenses, 90% of all my images are shot on my Canon 5D Mark 3 and the Canon 24-105mm lens. Recently I have spent more time using the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 manual lens with the Canon 5Ds, the results are breathtaking! I never leave the house without at least 4 batteries, and 6 CF 64gb Lexar memory cards. The worst thing any photographer can face is a perfect picture opportunity and not enough battery/memory to capture the moment.

Feedback

My best advise is always pay attention and to take your time when your out shooting. Let the image find you; give it time and the magic moment will present itself. I often find that if you leave the house hoping to capture a particular image, you will miss the other million wonderful moments because you weren't paying attention. Don't preoccupy your creative eye!
