Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Redcliffe beach in south-east Queensland, Australia. Redcliffe is a seaside suburb, just to the north of Brisbane.

Time

Taken in overcast morning light at around 8am on a summer day in December 2014.

Lighting

Although the morning was quite grey and overcast, the dramatic sky provided a great contrast to the boat in the foreground, almost giving it the appearance of having been washed up in an overnight storm.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, 18-55mm kit lens @ 27mm, ISO 100, f/4, 1/1000 sec. Hand held, no flash used.

Inspiration

Walking on the beach during a holiday in Queensland, I spotted this boat which had been left beached by the low tide. The grey skies overhead provided a great backdrop to the boat, which had interesting features such as the netting and folded mast. I took the photo from a low viewpoint to give a better profile to the boat against the sky.

Editing

Post processed in ACR with adjustments to highlights, contrast, exposure, shadows, whites, blacks and clarity. Converted to B&W in Photoshop CS6 and a levels layer added for further adjustments.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7100, 18-55mm kit lens, 10-24mm Tamron lens, 70-22mm Tamron lens, 50mm prime lens, 90mm Tamron macro lens. Slik tripod, ND and GND filters, Lee Big Stopper, MIOPS lightning trigger, remote release. I also have a smaller backpack which I use when hiking with just a couple of lenses - usually the 18-55 and the wide angle; although this depends on what I am setting out to capture.

Feedback

Look for different viewpoints and angles, these can provide for a new way to look at things, which others often miss. Get down low, or up high, lay on your stomach in the dirt or sand, dare to get wet. Always be on the lookout for interesting subjects, always carry your camera when you go walking, you never know what you may see/find. Sometimes the most ordinary, mundane subject can give you a great photo, you just have to look for it.
