Location
This is one of my favorite images to this day. It was taken at Percy Warner Park in Nashville TN. There is an incredible stone wall there that always provides a gorgeous setting!Time
I shot this around noon actually. The location we were at provides the most beautiful lighting no matter what time of day.Lighting
I wanted this image to have that gold hour feel to it. There is a wonderful tree canopy over where we were shoot that allowed for the light to be diffused beautifully, which made it easy to add color adjustments in post and get the look I was hoping for.Equipment
I am solely a children's photographer. So I keep it super simple when I photograph. This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark ii, my second hand Sigma 70-200, and one pack of Smarties Candy.Inspiration
I;m blessed to have lovely clients who trust my vision fully. I had been researching old book illustrations and was drawn in by the connection between children and animals.Editing
YES! Post if my favorite part of the photography equation, its where my whole vision comes together. In this image the child was reaching for candy from his mothers hands. I removed her, and added the fox. Paying attention to lighting and shadows to create a sense of realness. After that I topped with a canvas texture, and continued onto my regular post processing routine. I prefer a deeper, punchy feel, so I always lower the brightness of the background allowing the subject to pop, as well as work with curves to create the look I love.In my camera bag
I'm really super simple when it comes to my bag. This image was taken in 2014 so it has evolved a bit since then, but the over all is still the same. I pack both the Canon 5D Mark ii, as well as the Mark iii. Canon 70-200, My Nifty Fifty (which you seriously can't go wrong with, its cheap, light weight, a crazy simple lens, but I have gotten some amazingly beautiful images with it. I feel like it is a must have for anyone starting out.). Some extra batteries and memory cards and thats it. Other than Smarties. Aways have smarties. They are small, colorless, don't melt or make a mess. Absolutely perfect for bribery of small children who don't want to have their portrait taken.Feedback
When creating composites like this, it is so much easier when you go to the session with a plan. I knew I wanted him looking over at fox, knowing what my final image would look like ahead of time allowed me to guide him on where to look to keep the image as realistic as possible. Another thing I can't stress enough would be scale. Make sure when doing composites, if you want a realistic feel, that your sizes are proportionate. Nothing will throw off an image more than an elephant the same size as a six year old child.
