Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my first "Winter" trip to South Haven, MI. This was one of those shots that was just that easy, it was so beautiful I couldn't stop taking photos.

Time

I arrived in South Haven in the early afternoon. After about 4 hours and a couple trips back to the vehicle to get warm, I felt I had what I was looking for.

Lighting

It was already an overcast day which helped tremendously, with the clouds acting as a natural diffuser. I think it gives the image a dark, cold feeling.

Equipment

Believe it or not this was taken with my first DSLR setup, a Nikon D3100 with a Tamron 70-300 4-5.6 Handheld, No tripod.

Inspiration

With me being a Michigan native, I knew the beauty of The Great Lakes especially in summer. But I wanted to capture something a little different. There's a certain beauty in an early 1900's lighthouse covered in ice.

Editing

Did a couple small adjustments with shadows and highlights in lightroom, and had to remove a couple tourists out on the pier(also done in lightroom). No crop.

In my camera bag

I'm a firm believer that the photographer makes the image, not the camera. Currently I use a Nikon D3200 as my main body and a Nikon D3100 as my backup. I have a standard 18-55 Nikon, a 50mm 1.8g Nikon, and a 70-300 Tamron. I carry over 50gb of SD cards and two extra batteries because you never know where you'll end up or what you'll need.

Feedback

Just get out and shoot. I procrastinated taking this trip for months before I followed through. If you want solid images, your in control of that. Just get out and see the world through your viewfinder, the good shots will follow.
