Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in the grotto area of St. Lucy's Church. The church is located in Bronx, New York.Time
During a recent trip to the church, I stumbled across a beautiful stain glass window in the grotto area of the space. Since it was noon, the sunlight was ideal for capturing falling light. The light illuminated from the sun created some beautiful hues of blues and green. My favorite area of the photo is the hint of green that is streaming through the open window. The space is frequented because it is a place for prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection. I often look to this photo to restore my sense of calm.Lighting
The best part about this photo is that it is 100% natural, existing lighting. The sun served as my light source. To maximize the light source, I positioned myself at an angle to capture the falling light that is streaming through the window.Equipment
I used my favorite go-to camera, a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7. The photo was captured with a 35mm lens in manual mode. I did not need a tripod or other equipment as the area was well illuminated with natural light.Inspiration
After taking a moment to pray and sit in silence, I noticed the stain glass window in the corner of the room. I am fascinated and drawn to the stain glass overall and since I did not have a photo of one in my photo library, I decided to snap a photo of it. The contrast created from the mixing of stone and glass (both natural resources) is one of the many beautiful elements of nature.Editing
I did not apply any filters or enhancements to this photo. In my camera bag
You will typically find my Panasonic Lumix camera, a lithium battery charger, white card for bouncing light, media cards, and a USB in my camera bag.Feedback
In order to capture a version of this photo, I would advise my fellow shutterbugs to practice patience, study how the light shifts on a breezy day, and trust your instincts. I studied the entire room for a few minutes, noticing the different properties of light before deciding to frame the shot. I also studied how the light filtered into the room. I waited for the sun to cascade it's light on the glass and squeezed the shutter button. Photography is about having fun in the moment. Let mother nature do her thing and be ready to document as much as possible.
