This photo of the Flying Red Horse atop the Old Magnoila Oil Building in downtown Dallas. A longtime landmark and tallest building in Dallas for many years.Time
There was talk on the news on the morning of October 6th that there was going to be a huge rally by "Occupy Dallas" and I was intrigued by it so I grabbed the camera and took off for downtown. Wasn't really sure where they were going to be starting the rally so I parked in the old parking lot for reunion arena. Paid my $5 for all day and took off for downtown figuring I would find them. It gave me an opportunity to shoot some of the local buildings that I drive by all the time as a resident of the area but never really get to see from the sidewalk level. About 10 am as I approached Commerce St I noticed the the big red horse. I have previously taken nighttime pics and thought I would capture a few shots of it in the day light. I hadn't really paid much attention to it but they say the building was refaced in 1999.Lighting
10:00 am with a bright clear sky.Equipment
Canon EOS 60D using Canon 24-135 F/10, 1/800, ISO 400 -1 Step exposure. With no flash. I was zoomed 135mm to try and capture the horse which was really difficult from the street level with the surrounding structures.Inspiration
It holds a special significance to myself personally because for many years we traveled to Paris in northeast Texas to visit family. We would almost always leave late on Sunday night to get back home in Dallas. As we topped the hill coming through Rockwall at 10:00 or 11:00 PM this big red flying horse was like a beacon that screamed "we are home now".Editing
I was so surprised by the colors in the photo of the building that you really don't notice much from the street so I boosted the clarity and vibrance so they would really stand out.In my camera bag
Canon 60D, Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon EOS Rebel (my first DSLR), Speed light 420. Extra batteries, cards. etc.Feedback
My advise is to grab your camera and just get out. Go somewhere and do something that you have never done before. Something good always happens. Will C
