This photo was taken at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.Time
I happen to have a day off, and wanted to head to this museum to get a few shots from inside, as well as outside. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, I waited for there to be as few people as possible, and got the shot just at the right moment. It was during the afternoon, but still seemed like a busy day for the museum during the week.Lighting
The nice contrast in the picture is from the light at the top of the stairs coming from the dome, but also the darker underside of the stairs. It was relatively low light at this location.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D610 and a Tamron 10-24 wide angle lens at 12mm.Inspiration
In addition to landscapes and architecture, some of my favorite shots are of staircases. I also have some from the Rookery stairs, also in Chicago. This particular staircase has a great uniqueness to it, and I've always wanted to capture it from both the top and bottom.Editing
The picture was taken by blending three different exposures, imported into Lightroom and then processed in Nik software by Google. There were very few adjustments made, which included highlights, shadows, and contrast.In my camera bag
Since I usually photograph landscapes/cityscapes at night, I always have my tripod in my bag. In addition to my Nikon D610 and wide-angle lens, I will carry my 35mm prime lens, the kit 24-85mm lens, and a handful of filters such as Neutral Density filters, depending on how long I want the long exposure. Once in a while, if I'm feeling particularly creative, I'll throw in my fish eye lens, which is great when shooting from rooftops or other high locations.Feedback
There are so many places to see in Chicago, both indoors and outdoors. I'd recommend to explore as much as possible. Always look behind you during your walks, too, so you can be sure to capture any perspectives you might otherwise miss. I'd also recommend to take a walking tour, or an architecture tour during the nicer months. You can't go wrong in Chicago!
