Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the mother-to-be's own bedroom in front of a large window. I brought a filmy sheer with me and clipped it to the existing curtain rod.

Time

This was mid afternoon, as that was the best time of the day for natural lighting in this window.

Lighting

I spend a lot of time talking with this mother-to-be in order to understand exactly what she was hoping for in the maternity shoot. She wanted to feel beautiful and sexy while capturing this magical moment of pregnancy.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with a 50mm lens. No other equiptment, flash or tripod.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the mother-to-be. She wanted this magical moment to be captured for a lifetime. Her hands gently cupping her belly while she looked downward, as if she was looking at her new baby.

Editing

I did use a center focus light blur to bring the eye of the viewer to the mother-to-be's belly.

In my camera bag

I normally come prepared. I carry several lenses, lighting, hot box, umbrella, back drops and back drop stands and extension cords. I also bring things that can be used as props. Such as in this photo, I had a set of flimy sheer panels and clips to hold it up. I also carry ribbons, note cards in colors, black markers, hats, necklaces and gloves. I also have a lot of other little odds and ends that I will bring depending on the setting and mood we are trying to capture.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to take a leap and suggest the model be in just her panties. Spend a lot of time talking with your model/client to build a sense of trust and get a clear picture of what they want. I asked this mother-to-be how she connected to her unborn baby. She told me that she frequently cupped her belly and talked to the baby. I used that as a basis for this shot. A lot of times models/clients are afraid, but with kind honest words you can build a trust for the model/client. My client was reluctant but afterwards was very happy she stepped out of her comfort zone and did this shot.
