Location
This photo was taken at Costa Dorada hotel in Isabela, Puerto Rico. I had watched these storms roll in for week, almost able to set your watch to them. I decided to try and capture this moment in time from our balcony during one particular vicious storm.Time
Evening, around 8:00pm. The stormsLighting
I wanted to try desperately to convey the beauty and awe that I was actually witnessing from these storms at night. It was difficult balancing exposure for the scene, and the background lightning. After allot of trial and error I had finally got the exposure close enough so that it could be adjusted in post. I used a remote shutter and fired off multiple shots to capture the lightning.Equipment
Canon 50D, Tamron 17-50 older model, non IS. Vanguard tripod with a medium ball head. remote shutter release. regular umbrella fastened to tripod with large clips. I usually use rocks, or whatever is at hand, on the tripod to try and make it as stable as possible. extra cf cards, assortment of clips and bungies. depending on where and what I am doing, sunscreen, bug spray, water, lunch, etc....Inspiration
I had been traveling for work to this location for some time. The storms came every evening like clockwork. I wanted to capture the mood of these spectacular scenes as best that I could. I had setup and taken several shots of the pool and clouds during the day, my wife told me to see it during the storm. It took a few tries to capture it correctly.Editing
Yes, Lightroom for balancing the exposure, making darks and lights more defined, a little sharpening and noise cleanup. Vignette to taste. exported to JPG for posting. In my camera bag
Canon50D, tamron 17-50, Tamron 70-300, Canon 50mm 1.8. Speedlights, various filters, cpl, etc. extra batteries, weather gear, notepad and pen. And I either bring my tripod or monopod depending on where and what I am trying to accomplish. I use stiffer than usual tripod heads, mostly ball heads.Feedback
Patience!! It took me several tries to even get close to a decent shot. Allot of trial and error, experimenting, and a little luck! I went to this site several times, morning and night, and finally lucked out. I was fortunate enough to have a great view from the balcony of were we stayed. It was unbearably hot and humid, bugs everywhere. It took a couple of hours of experimenting to get it right. Even though under my own self imposed pressure, I took my time and had allot of fun doing so.
