Behind The Lens
Location
Behind our house there's a set of steps leading down to the main roadTime
It around 5pmLighting
it was slighly overcastEquipment
I used a Nikon D40 with the standard kit lensInspiration
My wife was at the back gate with our baby daughter and all the kids who had been playing together in the square behind the house came to say hello, before they all scooted off home I grabbed my camera and asked her to sit them on the steps but I didn't organise or pose them I just let them settle for a while and took a few shotsEditing
I did very little post on this shot, slight tweaking in photoshop of contrastIn my camera bag
I have a Nikon D3100 with a 35mm lens which gives great depth of field and a D5100 with a Sigma 70-300 lens which is awesome for macro and distant shots, I carry 3 batteries and I always have a pair of sunglasses with me because I often shoot through them as a make-shift filter.Feedback
I would say when shooting people it's about capturing a moment or look so don't make the camera a big deal. I try not to draw attention to it, it puts pressure on the sitter and tends to generate fake smiles or stiff posture. Just take your time and have a conversation and the subjects personality will shine through.
