Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my garden. I am a self-taught photographer who has had an interest in photography for over 30 years. One day I hope to audit some photography college courses or attend workshops. I desire to learn and improve my skill and hobby. I read a lot of resources online and also get tips from fellow photographers.

Time

I took this shot one summer in the early evening.

Lighting

No flash just natural sunlight used. The burst of colors in the flowers just add to the photo. I captioned this one "Hello Sunshine."

Equipment

This was taken with using my first DSLR Sony a390. Settings were 35mm, 1/60, f5 with ISO 200. No tripod or flash. I have since upgraded to a Canon EOS Rebel T5i. (Word of caution: ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR CAMERA BEFORE LETTING GO OF IT! I had put it on my bed but didn't realize the camera was too close to the edge and it rolled off hitting the floor. From that point on I would get random errors ...sigh...). I enjoy DSLRs and I glad not to be using 35mm film any longer.

Inspiration

I enjoy photographing nature (as you can see by my page). Instead of photographing a bloom head on I chose to off set it giving the photograph a more interesting feel. Flowers, birds, the moon and water are my favorites to shoot.

Editing

I used Photoshop and did little post-processing. I used the brightness/contrast and sharpening tool. Just like anything you have to make time to learn and use it. I would rather be behind my camera than a computer!

In my camera bag

My camera bag normally contains my Canon EOS Rebel T5i along with 2 charged batteries and lens cloth/cleaner. In addition, my favorite and latest lens is the Canon 50mm 1.4 (aka Nifty 50) and Canon Zoom 75-300mm 4-5.6.

Feedback

Think outside of the box and be patient. Read articles, tips, blogs, etc online to help master a photography technique you are interested in. I am always setting new photography goals for myself. One goal I am proud of is getting away from auto mode and using manual mode! And of course, practice, practice and practice. You can always delete your images and try again. Enjoy the challenge and keep on shooting!!
