Location
I took this photo at Boranup Forest near Margaret River, Western Australia. It is a beautiful location and thoroughly enjoy traveling down there.Time
I woke up early on Australia Day - The 26th of January 2015 - and took my oldest son (9 yrs old) with me around 5am. We drove for an hour to Boranup Forest and waited for the sunlight to crack through the trees at around 6:30 a.m. I gave my son a point and shoot camera to also capture what he wanted to in the forest. After this we went for breakfast together, so it was a Dad and son morning out for some photography.Lighting
I wanted to get the early morning sunlight breaking through the trees. This area is renown for it's trees but I wanted to give it that element of the sunlight cracking through. At the right angle and the sun itself partly blocked by a tree, as much as possible, I could get the sun-rays in the photo.Equipment
I took this photo with my Canon 6D - tripod mounted, using my mobile phone as a remote flash.Inspiration
A few months earlier I had been in this area with my students (I am a full time teacher - hobby/part time photographer) just after the winter months, on a foggy morning. We were on a photography excursion and I had done a uturn on a unsealed road in the middle of the forest. We drove over a little hill and saw the sunlight breaking through the trees. I took a photo then and it gave me the inspiration to come back and do something similar. However I also wanted to do it in the summer to give photo a different "feel".Editing
I did a little bit of post processing, in terms of adjusting the colour a bit and lighting. I like to try and leave my landscape photography feeling as natural as possible and try to make the image as my eye saw it on the day I took it.In my camera bag
I normally have my Canon 6D with a 24-70mm Tamaron lens. I also have my Polariser filter and tripod. I also have a 50mm Canon Prime lens. I also always take a spare battery and memory card.Feedback
Get up nice and early, have a predetermined location and know what time sunrise is - and be there a 1/2 hour earlier to setup and look for your best spot to set up. I always have a mental image of what I want to capture (occasionally I'll do a rough sketch of it). Sometimes you'll get what you were thinking, other times it's not so good and then on occasion it's a lot better than expected. An when you get that shot, that scene which you have seen and want to share with others, well that feels great!
