Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the town of Tubingen Germany on my way to their annual Christmas market, right after getting off a bus at a stop overlooking a city park.

Time

This was taken near noon in early December.

Lighting

Although the photo was taken at midday, with the sun position at a relatively far north latitude near the winter solstice, the light was not particularly harsh.

Equipment

This was a hand held shot taken on a Canon 7D with an EF24-105L series lens at 60mm.

Inspiration

I liked the symmetry of the parallel lines of trees, the snow covered ground, and the couple walking down the middle of the trees.

Editing

I cropped the original slightly to get rid of some distracting items in the foreground and the tree tops, and to put more emphasis on the couple. Since there wasn't a lot of color in the original shot, I processed it in monochrome, and the sepia tone gave me the result that I liked best.

In my camera bag

I've upgraded from the 7D and now carry a Canon 5DM3, with a 50D body as backup. On typical days like the one in the photo, I usually carry a 85mm f1.8 prime, the 24-105mm zoom this photo was taken with, and a 70-200mm L series all with assorted filters. Additionally I carry a 580EX II speedlight and a remote shutter release. All this fits neatly in a backpack. I also carry a lightweight Manfrotto tripod that I can sling over my shoulder or attach to the bottom of the backpack.

Feedback

I was living in Europe at the time, which is a photographer's dream. My advice would be to always be ready, particularly when travelling outside familiar surroundings, because a scene worthy of capture can appear at any time, whether street, landscape, architecture, etc.
