Fabulous shot. I'd like to see a cropped version, also, showing just the head.

Behind The Lens

Location

Island Beach State Park New Jersey

Time

It was taken late afternoon

Lighting

The photo was taken in mid-October when the sun in the late afternoon cast a beautiful glow on the vegetation growing on the island.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D-7100 Nikon 18-200 lens, D 5.6. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

The red fox are year round residents of Island Beach State Park. I have photographed them in the winter and wanted to get them at this time of the year. Seeing them is always a hit or miss adventure but it helps knowing where they like to frequent. When I got to this location I saw the fox napping in the sun. I very carefully approached it and got down on the ground eye level with it. After a few moments the fox opened it's eyes and I quickly took the photo.

Editing

I just adjusted the highlights and mid-tones.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon 18-200, Nikon 20-300, Nikon 12-24, Tamron 150-600. I now us a Nikon D500.

Feedback

Get familiar with the area where you plan to do your photography and the wildlife that inhibitive that area. Get to know the times of day they are most active and if they are people friendly. Always approach with caution and be respectful of them, especially do not feed them. The correct lens will let you get close up photos while maintaining a safe distance. Having your camera, the correct lens and settings already in place is important because you can happen upon the wildlife and will only have a few minutes to capture your shot.
