Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at the wonderful beach at Porth Nanven in the county of Cornwall, Southwest England.
Time
I remember the day well, I was visiting with a local photographer Peter Edwards who lives close by - we checked the weather and it looked marginal for the sunset we wanted to see but, as you can see from the image, as the sun dipped towards the horizon it reached a breach in the clouds allowing a magnificent show of colour... The sunset we wanted!
Lighting
I always strive to capture the glory of a coastal sunset - this often takes planning but also takes a deal of luck. In this case the planning encompassed sunset angle, general weather conditions and tidal range - but the luck came in the cloud break at the right time and at the right point in the sun's journey towards the horizon.
Equipment
I used a Nikon D750 with 24-85mm lens, tripod and remote trigger.
Inspiration
This beach is an iconic place for many UK based landscape photographers, and having visited here twice before I really wanted to get 'that' sunset - this trip more than satisfied me!
Editing
I normally use Lightroom to post process, in this case trimming levels to balance e exposure, and remove some pesky dust spots from the raw image.
In my camera bag
I have always shot with Nikon DSLRs, alongside the Nikon D7000 I shot this with I now have a D750 and often use both on a shoot - the D750 shooting at 24mm and the D7000 with my trusty 70-200 f/2.8. I find, for landscape photography, this allows me to get two completely different perspectives on a scene and often the telephoto images are the ones I choose over the wider angle.
Feedback
Plan, plan, plan... And then hope Mother Nature puts on the show you'd hoped for! Landscape photography can be a game of percentages, in the end you have to be in the right place otherwise the display will pass you by.
