Behind The Lens

Location

I am self taught and this photo was taken in a very simple setting; in my room at home.

Time

This was taken at night in my dimly lit room.

Lighting

I used a lamp lighting that was placed next to my camera, no flash. I wanted the photo to have a mysterious and grungy look. Therefore, I kept the lighting dim so there would be great contrast and shadows.

Equipment

This was taken on my Canon EOS 7D with a 18-55mm lens. I used a simple tripod and no other camera equipment.

Inspiration

I really wanted to take a unique self portrait that showed the emotion I was feeling at that very moment. I used my messy "floating" hair to portray the craziness or even stress I was feeling.

Editing

I did do a little bit of post-processing. I shot this photo in raw but later desaturated and contrasted it a bit to portray more a a grungy/dark look to the photo.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of fancy equipment but I do typically fill my bag with what I can. Not only do I always pack my Canon EOS 7D with a 18-55mm lens, but I also pack my film Canon A-1 with a 50mm lens, and my Fuji-film Instax Polaroid and film for it. Occasionally, depending on the outing, I will bring my tripod.

Feedback

This photo took many tries. Some advice I would give would be to keep trying until you get the product you desire. This photo was taken on my own. Every attempt I took at this photo, I had to keep flipping my hair up at the precise time, so the timer on my camera would capture it while it was still in the air or falling. I would have to keep going back to my camera to check what came of the photo, then go back to the place I sitting and keep trying until I get what I wanted. Never give up and if you put effort into whatever you are doing, you will get the outcome you want! Also, you can take a great photo no matter what kind of equipment you have! Inexpensive and simple to expensive and intricate, put passion into it, and it will show to be great no matter what.
