Long double exposed shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was a shot from an over-bridge on a busy Singapore road.

Time

This is one of my favorite shot. I was trying to make a surreal photo when I saw a busy road below the over-bridge I was standing at night at around 9:00 PM.

Lighting

As the over-bridge, from where I took this shot, was dark and the road underneath was only lit by the not too strong street lights, it was in perfect condition to have a long duration multiple exposure shot. But I did not have anything like ND filters at my disposal. So I covered the first shot (of the double exposure shot) by covering the top half of the lens with the camera strap itself at a low shutter speed. Then rotated the camera 180 degree and took the second shot by covering the other half of the lens.

Equipment

I used Nikon D7000, with Nikon 50 mm F1.8 lens, handheld without flash.

Inspiration

While walking on the over-bridge I looked at the speedy cars running below with the trailing lights at night and though to make a surreal abstract photo using double exposure technique when world will seem both normal and upside down at the same time! But I did not have any ND filters or anything with me. I improvised by covering the half lens with the camera strap itself, took one shot and then took the second shot by rotating the camera 180 degree, by covering the other half of the lens. The well-executed shot resulted this photo and I liked it a lot.

Editing

I post processed to increase the contrast and sharpening a bit in photoshop.

In my camera bag

It depends on which type of photo shoot I am intended to do. Now I have one Nikon D7000, D500, Tamron 150-600mm G2, Nikon 50mm f1.8, Tamron SP 90 mm 1:1 Macro, Tokina 11-16 mm ATX Pro. Nikon 16-80mm, Tamron 300 mm, Dolica Proline Tripod.

Feedback

There is huge possibility in the genre of double exposure, long exposure photoshoot and one should try to improvise the process depending on what he/she has in his/her hands. As described above it is a double exposure shot in low light condition with slow shutter speed. Anyone can try to get it. But to have a great shot one has to be creative!
