The salt flats at Badwater Basin create the most unique patterns in the ground. The hardest part about shooting here is finding the right composition. One foot to your right or left will change the entire flow of the image. You can spend hours finding the right shot, and then just waiting for the light. This image is a “multiple-day HDR”. A technique in which I shoot various elements of the image on different times of day or even different days but from precisely the same spot and angle. Regular HDR takes seconds to minutes for the bracketing of images. This is actually hours or even days. For this image I shot the ground texture at sunset, then waited for the following sunset to capture the cloud portion which was much more dramatic. I then combined the two together to make a single image. This photo is one of the cleanest examples of that technique I have to date.
