Stunning! The power of simplicity...the light tones of her skin, the deep red lips, the black hat and background all captured so well balanced, excellent lighting for the perfect " Femme Fatale" :-)

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio in Malaysia, I have a large area that lends itself well to a studio, although my wife seems to think otherwise.

Time

The image was taken around mid morning, because it's a studio shot I was under time constraints.

Lighting

In this shot I used a single Elinchrom 500 BRX with a 22" beauty dish with sock, the subject was about 4ft in front of a grey backdrop it was shot at 1/200 sec at f16. The light was placed slightly to camera right.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D MK III, EF70-200MM F2.8L with the focal length of 70mm. ISO 200, 1/200th sec, f16, handheld. An Elinchrom 500 BRX with 22" beauty dish & sock.

Inspiration

I team up with a make-up artist on occasions for fun, she supplies a model and the make-up and I supply the images, mutual back scratching. On this occasion she had a model who had done some full length portraits but ran out of time for the headshots, so we got together with the sole idea of producing this shot. I'm not a fashion photographer, so I enjoy these kind of shoots. The idea was to produce a mysterious image while highlighting the just the lips

Editing

Because of the basic nature of the shot I did very little post-processing aside form removing blemishes in the skin and a little dodge & burn on the lips.

In my camera bag

My trusty kit is usually the 5D MK III, the Canon 70-200L, the wonderful new Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art. I have a 7D for backup. My Color Passport Checker and Sekonic L-358 Flash Master. I have 3 Elinchrom 500 BRX's and a range of modifers. I shoot tethered to and MacBook Pro through Capture One.

Feedback

This image is very simple to recreate, it's a single light set-up and could be produced just as easily using a speedlight. The idea is to use a fast shutter to knock out the background and a soft light source close to the model. The hardest part was getting the light to the correct position so the hat wasn't casting a shadow too far down the face.
