Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio. Which at the time was a double garage. I love how you can't tell there is a home gym to the left, and a pile of paint cans to the right! I also enjoy how the background was a black blanket I had picked up from Bed, Bath and Beyond for $10!

Time

This particular session started at around 10am. I find that is a great time for woman who are heavily pregnant. Not too early, but not so late that they may be fatigued from the pregnancy.

Lighting

This was a simple one light set up, off to the right and slightly behind Kate, with a softbox.

Equipment

This was shot on a good 'ol Nikon D80, with a 17-55mm f/2.8. The lighting kit was a basic Jinbei strobe setup, with a rectangular soft box. I must also mention the step ladder I was standing on (I'm only 5'4", and Kate felt like a generous 6 foot!).

Inspiration

I wanted to push myself to move beyond the standard two light set up, and try to create some mood. I was inspired to try with one light after watching some youtube videos Vine Images had created. One particular video advised to "just have fun, and play with the lights". So that's exactly what I did. :)

Editing

Yes, I smoothed the skin and darkened the background. I also applied some actions purchased from Paint the Moon. They were from the Perfect Portrait set.

In my camera bag

Now I have my Nikon D800, 24-70mm f/2.8 nikkor lens, circular polarising filter, and a spare UV filter which I can apply some vasoline to, for when I get to go nuts!

Feedback

Set up your studio the day before, and play with the lighting by moving the height, position, power and light modifiers. Keep note of all of your settings (exposure and also light settings). This will give you confidence for you shoot, and a reference point to fall back on. :)
