Location
This photo was taken on a research expedition to sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. It is a truly remarkable place and I was fortunate enough to travel there as part of a research team investigating the communities inhabiting the shallow marine waters surrounding the island.Time
This photo was taken mid-morning. We were walking to one of our sampling sites and we came across a large king penguin rookery. They are very inquisitive birds and a few will always break off from the main group and investigate whenever they see anything unusual and humans are pretty unusual in place like the sub-Antarctic.Lighting
The weather at Macquarie Island is often overcast and cold so the light is typically quite soft throughout the day. What struck me about this scene was the colour and the contrast of the yellow against the black, grey and white feathers and the way the orange parts of the bird's bills stand out. I wanted to fill the frame with the different colours and textures of the birds.Equipment
This was taken with an old Nikon D100 with a 200mm f2.8 lens. The camera was handheld.Inspiration
I love penguins. They are such inquisitive animals and they are so noisy! you really notice how the natural bursts of colour in the birds feathers contrast so starkly with with the drab, cold grey landscape and this gives the penguins such personality. I wanted to capture this personality.Editing
No. This image was straight out of the camera. I didn't feel that anything needed to be done to it. Looking at it now I think I could have boosted the contrast a little but I don't like to go back and re-process old images because the image is what I saw at the time and I don't want to manipulate my memory of the scene. In my camera bag
I typically shoot with a Canon 5D mk III. I absolutely love this camera and can't even imagine how good the next generation of 5D will be. My go-to lens is a 24-70mm f2.8L which is such a nice piece of glass. I also use a 16-35mm for wide angle landscapes and underwater photos and a 70-200mm f2.8.Feedback
It doesn't matter where you are you can find beauty in the landscape. Macquarie Island is a cold and grey place that abounds with amazing and unique wildlife. Take your time in the landscape and pick out details which lend themselves to interesting images. Look for colours and textures and try and convey a sense of place in your photos.
