Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at glacier lagoon in iceland. This is where pieces of ice detach from the glacier and meet salt water from the ocean in a lagoon. I went there for my 5th year wedding anniversary and this was a sight i will never forget. I was interested in the layering in this scene with the full glacier in the background and icebergs in the foreground. I am a self taught photographer with this being the photo i am most proud of.

Time

I took this in the late afternoon after a trip along the whole south coast of iceland.

Lighting

The natural light in the late afternoon in this photograph lent well to the calm and slighty eerie feel to this lanndscape. I noticed the sunlight catching the edges of the icebergs making them really stand out and sparkle.

Equipment

I used my panasonic lumix fz72 to capture this image. I took a couple of shots using my tripod but found the best composition was achived by being able to move around freely and try different angles.

Inspiration

This image shows the transition from glacier to iceberg to water, including all three elements. I think this shows and tells the story of the journey which may have started thousands of years ago on top of a mountain. This, along with the beauty of this landscape inspired my photograph.

Editing

I did little in the way of post processing, only slight colour correction.

In my camera bag

I usually take my lumix fz72 for shots of wildlife and images in difficult locations as it enables me to capture action shots quickly and freedom to experiment with composition freely. I favor my nikon d300 for static or pre compsed shots, often using it with a selection of filters and my tripod.

Feedback

My advice would be to really study the subject and move around it. With this photo, i walked around the lagoon observing the different shapes, textures and how the light changed the mood from different angles.
