Behind The Lens

Location

I am a begginer photographer, so a studio is a no go for me at this point. This photo was taken in my room, in the beautiful Zagreb, Croatia.

Time

I think it was around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Since I have no real lighting equipment I chose to shoot when there is enough light to work with.

Lighting

I had to consider the fact that my room only has one window, located on the west side with the view of a house next door so there was no direct, strong sunlight. The sun bounces of the huge white wall so at the time of the shoot it was realy lovely and natural light, a bit weak though, what made me hit the ISO values a little higher.

Equipment

A borrowed, Canon EOS 600D with a kit lens 18-55mm, no tripod or flashes (begginer and poor, wink wink). For the filler light I used a table lamp (and a closet mirrot), put it horizontaly so it was a bit stronger and voila.

Inspiration

The shoot was a part of an assignement we were given at my college (nude series) so I wanted to create sensual photos, not sexy or flashy, just sensual which would evoke something personal for everyone that sees them. One day I was surfing the web as I do in my spare time and I stumbled on a quote which, I found, suited the image perfectly (can't remember whose it was I'm afraid). It went something like this: -"Sensuality is the soft whisper compared to sexuality's loud trumpet. I like soft whispers. They're more fun."

Editing

I can't quite remember exactly what I did, but I do know I used Adobe Lightroom for the highlits, shadows and lens correction (possibly minor croping to get the right angle) and then PS for the finishing touches (removing blemishes and moles mostly). As I said, I'm new to photography so consequently new to post-processing, but I was realy happy the way the photos turned out eventualy.

In my camera bag

Repeating myself unfortunately; begginer, borrowed camera, can't afford a bag, etc.

Feedback

Make sure you have more light than I had. Even if you dont have alot of lighting equipment there is alot you can do with a couple of windows (possibly use a mirror or a lamp as I have). A rotating screen on your camera helps alot with these kinda, top-down shots, since you can place your subject easier and you don't have to shoot a billion times before you get the right angle. One of the key things, I think, why this image is so captivating is the fact that my model (she is awesome by the way) was very comfortable and relaxed. That is one thing you have to keep in mind; you are not alone with your camera like you would be shooting trees or a lava lamp. Comunicate in a friendly way, maybe put some music if your model likes it. If she/he is comfortable, the photos will turn out alot better.
