Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a vacant lot that was nothing but a large area of dirt, it was perfect for getting mud slinging shots of this truck!

Time

I knew the area we were going to was in full sun until late in the evening, so we waited until the sun was just barely behind the trees and the lot was shaded, perfect photo light! Late in the evening is my absolute favorite time to shoot.

Lighting

Most of the light is in the middle of the composition focusing on the truck and the long trail of dirt behind it. I wanted this photo to have the "truck advertisement" feel as well as a masculine, tough feel. I knew this could have not been achieved during normal daylight hours because the sun at its highest point during the day does not showcase each individual object in a unique way, rather, it seems to blend everything together in the same light and creates unwanted shadows.

Equipment

I used my Canon 60D camera and the Canon EFS 18-135mm lens.

Inspiration

My friend, the owner of this truck, was just about to sell it.. In fact, he did sell the truck only to get another 10x cooler. We knew before he said goodbye to it for good we had to take awesome mud slinging photos of his amazing truck! This was my first time taking photos like this and I was very excited to capture fast paced, mud-slinging, action.

Editing

Yes! I did some post processing in this photo. Everything was edited in Adobe Lightroom. I darkened the edges to enhance and lighten the action in the middle. I loved using the clarity adjustment brush on the truck and bringing out the details on it. The clarity and exposure adjustment brushes both played a big part in this photo. The clarity brush helped enhance the airborne dirt and the ground below so the viewer could feel as if they could touch the photo and it would feel rough just like dirt.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my Canon 60D camera, the Canon Speedlite 430EX II, and the Sigma 50mm Art lens for Canon cameras, and the Canon EFS 18-135mm lens.

Feedback

I feel like my finger was clicking the shutter at 100MPH! Everything was happening so fast as my friend drove around. Always be on your toes when shooting this type of shot. Constantly taking photos as the action is happening allows you to get different angles of each turn and you can find which photo achieves your vision appropriately during post-processing because you have so many options to choose from. Use a lens with a wide range, you do not want to stand close to a truck like this, mud will hit you, and your camera. In order to make sure you and your camera stay safe during a shoot like this, be sure you are far enough away to get the shot you want and far enough away where the driver can see you and the mud will not reach you. Shooting late in the evening when the sun is starting to set will allow you to get a unique light that will showcase each area of the composition beautifully.
