Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in the Sahara desert, in Algeria, near Timmimoun, many years ago. I remember I had to climb that big dune to get to the top. It was a difficult experience because my legs were nearly half covered in sand on every step.

Time

It was taken in the morning, just after the sun rose. I remember it was very cold, because it was in January. We wait for the sunrising to took some pictures and then I got this one, with the sun a little higher.

Lighting

Light came from the side. Sunlight was still quiet warm but no so much. Sky was very blue and sand was extremely orange in that light.

Equipment

Well, this is quite difficult to remember because it was in 1984. Camera was an analog Nikon with a built-in zoom, something like a 35-105 mm. Shot was taken on slide film. Neither flash nor tripod were used.

Inspiration

Actually this is a classic pyramidal composition. The border of the dune works as a line that leads the eye from the bottom to the sky. There, the small white clouds have the power to spread our eye. Also important is the powerful contrast between complementary colours (blue-orange).

Editing

I had a copy of that slide on paper. Some years ago I find it in box while I was revisiting my analog work. I scanned it and then cleaned in Aperture because some spots were fixed on its surface.

In my camera bag

Now I have a couple of cameras. I have a Canon 6D with a Canon 50mm f:1,4, a Tamron 24-70 f:2,8 and also a Tamron 70-300. I usually take with me a Yongnuo flash. I also use a Leica D-Lux 6 as a travel and street camera. A small jewel!

Feedback

You have to keep your gears well sealed because sand goes into every little hole you have in your bag. Better into a plastic bag into the big bag. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon are the best hours to take some shots in the desert for me. Light is warmer and colours are more intense. If you go to the Sahara in winter you must keep well wrapped up! :)
