Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at one of the photo studios in the J-wing at Sheridan College, Oakville ON Canada, as a part of my photography lesson and also my first assignment, Portrait Photography.Time
The photo was shot indoors and so the outdoor lighting plays no importance for this picture. The lighting for this photo was manually set up using two soft boxes, reflector and an external light source (strobe lighting).Lighting
The photo was shot as a part of my lighting exercise for my "Introduction to photography" lecture, and we were practicing different types of lighting to create model portraits. This one in particular in called the butterfly lighting, and is characterized by the butterfly-shaped shadow that the light casts below the nose. Placing the strobe light slightly above the face and pointing it in the direction of the person’s face can produce this lighting. To make this lighting look more interesting, I asked the model to look down and face a little to one side (instead of a straight face) and moved the external light source accordingly to achieve that butterfly shadow below his nose.Equipment
The equipment I used for this project were, Canon EOS REBEL T1i with a 300mm telephoto lens, a tripod, two soft boxes on either sides of the model, studio strobe lighting (worked as an off-camera flash), a reflector and a grey backdrop. All the equipments for this project was rented out by Sheridan college.Inspiration
Since I was new to studio photography and managing indoor lighting setup, I was really inspired by all the portrait photo presentation our professor showed in-class before we started with this project. I was very inspired by Andrzej Dragan's photography style; it inspired me to create a high contrast portrait with realistic details.Editing
Yes, I mostly worked on Photoshop CC starting with cropping and creating a better composition, converting to black and white and increasing the contrast and details on his face to achieve that desirable portrait. In my camera bag
Honestly, I am still a student current studying graphic design and I’m looking forward to buying my own camera very soon. For now, I just carry my iPhone 5S around with me and practice mobile photography. Although when I do have to go for serious photo-shoots, for example school project; Sheridan offers to rent out the cameras, lenses, tripod and other photo accessories for a day or two, which is great for students to learn and practice photography without having to own a camera.Feedback
I'd say be prepared with all the equipment and make sure the strobe light is well connected to the camera with some test shots. Also prepare to arrive early as lighting setup can take up a lot of time. We practiced Side lighting, Rembrandt lighting and Butterfly lighting the same day, so I say not to get fixated with the strobe light's position, move the soft boxes, strobe lights and ask someone to help you with placing the reflector to get a better balance of shadows in your photos. Also talk to the models in between and before the photoshoot begins. I have learned that it helps them ease a little, making it comfortable for everyone.
