Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, California. As a mostly nature photographer, I was making succulent photo's during golden hour.

Time

As a mostly nature photographer, I was making succulent photo's during Golden Hour when I stopped by the greenhouse for a drink of water.

Lighting

The natural light caught my attention here. The way the late day light and shadows was playing through the wood structure was captivating.

Equipment

Using a Canon 7D with my go-to 28-135mm lens I adjusted my iso to capture the shadows. This was done at f3.5 and iso 200, with a shutter speed of 1/200.

Inspiration

One of the things a mentor taught that I always remember is that when you are in nature and see a beautiful capture to always look above you and behind you. It opens possibilities that most do not see. Like looking behind you when there's a beautiful sunset. Or looking above you when the light and shadows are long. The possibilities are always amazing.

Editing

I love bright, bold, natural colors. Skies and sunsets, flowers and trees. The paint of the world on full display. But sometimes a photograph just calls for the mood of tonal, contrasting lights and darks. I loved the mood created by the black and white tones. This was done in Lightroom using the sliders for development.

In my camera bag

The Canon 7D is a great cs camera. I have since upgraded to a Canon 5D, but still use the 7D occasionally. I mostly still use a 28-135, and keep a 50mm prime and a 70-200 zoom close at hand. I let nature dictate what lens I should use for the feeling I want to create from the beauty in front of me.

Feedback

Always keep your eyes open in all directions. And an open mind to capture the beauty around you. There is always something new to notice. In nature, the light changes from minute to minute. Find your muse and go for it! You may not use every photo you take, but there's always something that inspires a second look. Look up, down, sideways, and backward. Your vision and nature take care of the rest.
