Behind The Lens

Location

The guy in the photo is Lee McGovern, and this was taken during a Surf Life Saving Competition with Secret Harbour SLSC in Western Australia

Time

The timing was about 10am

Lighting

The sun was behind me at the time

Equipment

Shot with a Canon 70D, using a Canon EF 70 - 200mm USM the lens doesn't have an image stabilizer - however I took the shot freehand I rarely use a tripod

Inspiration

I love doing the SLSC and Surfing because of the combination you get between capturing the action and the addition of the water streaming off to add drama

Editing

Minimal Post Processing just a small tweak in Light Room and conversion to Black and White

In my camera bag

Canon 70 - 200mm USM, Canon 70 - 300mm USM, Sigma 10 - 20mm, ND3, Tripod, and Cable release

Feedback

Stay on the move, too often you see photographers on the beach with their tripods waiting for the shot to come to them - take yourself to the moment and be patient. If you can work the light to your advantage coupled with the movement of the Ocean you'll get some great action shots full of emotion.
