Behind The Lens

Location

In my old, very small, apartment in Umeå (Sweden).

Time

It was taken in the middle of the day. Thanks to a couple of black sheets i was able to block the sunlight from coming in through the window. Therefore I could control the light with the flashes.

Lighting

I used a very standard setup. Two flashes with a 45 degree angle on the model.

Equipment

Camera: Sony DSLR-A300 Lens: Tamron 28-75mm f2,8 Flash: Two Visico Intelligent 300 LR flashes

Inspiration

I wanted to try out my new studio flashes and since the room was to small to go full figure portrait, so I thought I'd go the other way; making it all in the details. So I placed the models eyes, and nothing else in focus of attention, and created a somewhat diagonal line between the eyes.

Editing

Most of it is made in Adobe Camera Raw. There I increased exposure and contrast and made it a little bit cooler. I also cropped it on the upper and bottom side to make the eyes bigger in relation to the rest. In Photoshop CS5 I used the filter Glamor Glow (in Color Efex Pro) with a cold tone and then unsharp mask filter on the eyes and eyelashes.

In my camera bag

At the moment I always carry my Sony A99 with the Tamron 28-75 f2,8. In addition to that, an extra battery and something to clean the lens with.

Feedback

Just focus on the eyes, but don't let the model know the rest will be cropped out. In that you get the full expression of the eyes, which in most cases let's you know more than enough. Then, just make sure the sharpness is on the eye closest to the camera and shoot, shoot, shoot.
