This photo was taken in our first home a couple of years ago when our son was going to Baptized. It was my wife's idea to have have a photograph taken of him for a momento that we would print for all of our guests.Time
It was in the evening after a long day of work in the office.Lighting
The lighting used for this shot was simple, one umbrella, camera right about 45 degrees ala Zack Arias!Equipment
I used my beloved Nikon D610 paired with the Nikon 85mm 1.8g. This combo is my go to setup, there's something magical and "normal" about the 85mm for me. I have owned many lenses (24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 35mm f2) but no lens feels to me like the 85mm. I used a 43" reflective umbrella with a Nikon SB-700 and the Yongnuo 622 triggers.Inspiration
Well my wife really wanted a "studio" looking shot, me being an amature who doesn't have access to a studio had to improvise. So I rearranged furniture in our home found our barest wall, I threw down a blanket that I thought would go ok with the wall color and focused on getting the expression we wanted. Luckily our son, at the time, always found daddy funny. So I was able to get him to chuckle pretty hard with my silly sounds and jokes.Editing
I did very little post processing, a slight color balance and lifting of the shadows in Lightroom. I usually try to shoot with the end result in mind, leaving little to no post processing to do.In my camera bag
Back when I took this photograph I used to carry my Nikon D610, Nikon 85mm 1.8g (my love), Nikon 24-70 2.8g, 35mm F2, and a Tamron 70-300mm. Now adays I still have and use my D610, but it gets less action as I'm transitioning to shooting more film. So you will now find in my bag a Nikon F100 (color film), Nikon N80 (b&w), Nikon 85mm 1.8g, Nikon 50mm 1.4D, Nikon 17-35mm 2.8 and Nikon 24-120 F4. I rarely carry my zooms as I prefer shooting with primes. My film stocks of choice are Kodak Portra 160, Fuji 400H, and Ilford HP5.Feedback
Keep it simple! The "set", lighting and camera equipment have been kept to a minimum. The Strobist & One-Light Workshop from Zack Arias have been my go to learning guides for lighting. Their mantra has always been do more with less.
