Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken at a shipyard a few hundred meters from my home in Akranes, Iceland.

Time

It is taken at sunset in late September.

Lighting

The sunset in the western part of Icelnd can be very vivid as the sun sets on the horizon like it sinks into the ocean. If the condidtions are right the colours can get almost surreal.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7d, a Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8, shot hand held.

Inspiration

This old boat which has been standing abandoned in the shipyard for almost 40 years has always been a reminder in my mind of broken dreams. An old fishing boat which new owners wanted to restore and bring back to its former glory but could not finance the project. They sold it to new owners who had plans to change it into a whale watching boat and for tourists wanting to try their hand at fishing. The investors who had promised to back the project changed their minds and new owners went bankrupt. Since then this beautiful boat has been decaying in the shipyard which was going to do the restoration a reminder of that all dreams do not come true. Underneath the boat one can see Snaefellsjokull Glacier, which according to Jules Verne is the entrance to center of the earth. I like the juxtaposition of these two, the broken dreams, and the realized dreams of Jules Verne.

Editing

There is minimal processing done in lightroom. The image was sharpened a bit and clarity increased to get more texture into the colours of the sky.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon EOS 7d and two to three lenses, along with a Lee Filter system, a wireless trigger and all the necessary accessories, such as microfiber cloths, a raincoat for the camera, extra batteries for the camera adn other things needing batteries, a head lamp and torch. I also usually keep a warm hat and gloves in a side compartment.

Feedback

For this kind of photography, timing and preparation is key. It is necessary to know where the sun will set to get the right colours into the frame. This photo had to be taken during a two week period in September to get the light I wanted to capture. When you are on location and conditions are right then experiment with angles and points of view. For this exact shot I used manual settings, ISO 400 and f5.6 with shutter speeds of 1/40. My tripod was on loan when this was so I was forced to shoot handheld so I had to keep my shutter speed this high to get a sharp enough image. I would have liked to have the tripod but that was not an option.
