Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a concert venue in my area where I often attend to photograph local bands.

Time

It was shot at night, though it was inside the venue.

Lighting

The ambient stage lighting was the only light source I used. This particular venue has quite a decent light set up for their stage & you can capture many different colors

Equipment

My Canon EOS T3 with prime 50mm 1.8f was my only equipment.

Inspiration

I waited for the right moment to capture the singers' expressions as they sang. You can see how they sing with feeling based on the emotion on their faces. I also wanted to capture a different angle other than just in front of the stage.

Editing

I processed the RAW file once to even out the overexposure since the lighting quickly changed from dark to bright as I was taking this photo. Cropping was done then I gave it more contrast, after that I used a Topaz Labs plug-in to give it the final look.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I'll be shooting. For concerts I usually only carry my Canon T3 & prime 50mm 1.8f, though I sometimes will also bring my standard 18-55mm kit lens if I want to take wider shots.

Feedback

For concert photography it's best to take photos at venues that have dynamic & adequate stage lighting to capture all the different colors. Definitely use a lens that's good with low light & a zoom lens helps when you're not able to be in front of the stage due to the crowd. I don't recommend using flash since it almost completely washes out any colorful stage lighting in the photos, I rarely use it unless it's a poorly lit venue.
