Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Sunset Bay Beach which is on the southern Oregon coast near the town of Charleston. This is a beach that my husband, Mike, and I love to visit year round. It has a large cove-like bay with a crescent-shaped sandy beach that is protected by towering sea cliffs and a reef as you can see in this photo. The beach area provides a lot of photo opportunities during the day, but it is the sunsets that are so spectacular.

Time

We usually stay at the State campground which is just a short walk from the beach. I remember that it had been a warm, clear day early in September. Before dinner, Mike and I decided to take a stroll down to the beach to watch the sunset. Wow, am I glad we did. I was able to capture a lot beautiful photos, but this is my favorite.

Lighting

The great thing about photographing sunsets at this beach is the lack of pollution and that there are no man-made structures inferring with the natural light.

Equipment

I shot this photo with my Panasonic Lumix camera. No additional lens or equipment was used.

Inspiration

I love photographing sunsets, especially over water – whether it is the ocean, a lake or even a river. Some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen were at this beach. Each one awesome and unique and I feel that I have been very lucky in being able to capture some of that beauty to enjoy and to share with others. This evening, it seemed Mother Nature was putting on a special show just for us. As the sun came closer and closer to the water, I just kept clicking away.

Editing

Yes, but very little. I did some cropping to bring the cliff, rock and sun closer in view and to eliminate some of the ocean in front and just a bit of sharpening.

In my camera bag

For me, the most important “equipment,” to always have available is a hat or baseball cap! I learned that a few weeks ago when we went to the coast for lunch and ended up at the beach where there were eleven surfers in the water. Because of the bright sunshine, I was basically shooting blind toward the waves – forgot to bring my cap! Other than that, it is just grab my camera and go. If I know that I am going to do shots where you need a very steady hand, I will take along my tri-pod.

Feedback

Just keep clicking away as the sun lowers into the ocean. This is what I love about digital cameras. You can snap a hundred photos and, maybe, get only one or two that say “wow” to you, but that’s okay because you have fulfilled your artistic need. When you view your photos on your computer, you will be surprised at what your camera caught that you did not even see with your own eyes.
