Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Time

I can't recall the exact time of day but I would assume it's late afternoon because I remember I was resting on the steps of the museum to people-watch. This was probably after a long day of exploring the museum.

Lighting

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel T1i. Being a self-taught hobbyist who takes a camera around to catch unexpected moments like these, I don't really use much equipment.

Inspiration

Quite often my photos seem to reflect a still moment in time where my subjects are frozen into a frame. But in reality, these moments are very quickly fleeting and a split second is all it takes to capture it forever or lose it to memory. This photo represents one of those special moments when I just happened to look to my side to see three birds pacing around. A perfect composition came to mind almost instantaneously so I rushed to angle myself to get the birds into the frame as I wanted them to be. Then I held my breath and waited for them to slowly walk around and align themselves right into what I had envisioned. It was one of those rare moments where reality and artistic vision come together which is what keeps me in love with photography.

Editing

I didn't do any post-processing for this photo.

In my camera bag

Just my good ol' Canon.

Feedback

I think the best advice I would like to give is stated so eloquently in a quote by a photographer, Elliott Erwitt, which I would like to share. "To me photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place...I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them." Keep an eye out around you on the seemingly ordinary things and find something you see that has never been seen before.
