Location
Location in this case was a local Hair Salon. I have to adapt to the enviroment for every one I visit. i.e. Mirrors, varying celing height, size of space, colour of walls etc. One thing that's never a problem is finding power sockets !Time
This wasn't important, I took all the studio equipment necessary to the clients location so this could have been shot at any time.Lighting
KIS - Keep it simple. I normally use one light, a beauty dish or possibly an 8" Octabox and a reflector. I rarely light backgrounds with another source or use rim lighting for my subject, but that's just me.Equipment
I now use a Nikon D810 for studio & mobile studio work. Prefered lenses are 85mm 1.4 and 105mm Macro 2.8, Studio Flash, in this case a single Elinchrom 600Rx. I mostly use a tripod, but it's not essential and often I take the camera off to explore other angles. Main light is usually on a boom and I have a stand with a reflector in a holder. Background (normally 2.7m paper roll) with background support system. Triggers for ElinchromInspiration
This was a commission for a Salon entry to the BHA's (British Hairdressing Awards)Editing
Yes, I have an amazing retoucher - Stefka Pavlova to do my high end hair and beauty retouching. We have a great working relationship. Generally she instinctively knows what I'd ask her to do and returns results in line with my style. Three is no need for constant back and forth instuctions. It takes a while to find someone like this.In my camera bag
Nikon D810, Nikon lenses- 50mm 1.4, 24-70mm 2.8, 85mm 1.4 and 105mm Macro 2.8. Lens cleaning pens, Light meter (rarely used), Spare batteries, SD cards, SD Card backup device - WD Passport, X-Rite Color Checker Passport, Air blower, Sensor swabsFeedback
Portraits like this, particularly focussing on hair for competition are very fussy. Shooting is very purposeful, I look at as much detail as possible before pressing the Shutter. Getting the angle of the creation the stylist requires, stray hairs are controlled, makeup scrutinized, clothes straightened and poses adjusted to get the desired results in camera.
