Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the town of Keene in the Adirondack Mountains . I thought I had quite a find but then evidently a lot of people feel that way too. The barn even has it's own Facebook page trying to preserve it as it falls into disrepair.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon. I was exploring with a friend while our more adventurous husbands were climbing the peaks in the background.

Lighting

I love the late afternoon and evening light. It gives a nice glow and the fall colors gave a perfect backdrop for this weathered icon.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel xs with a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens hand held.

Inspiration

I have a love for old barns that I picked up from my father. They represent an era in our country of handmade, homegrown life that is being replaced by the quick and plastic. Add to it a background splashed with color and how could I NOT photograph it.

Editing

I tend to be pretty simple in my processing. Yes I lighten shadows and fix contrast, add a little saturation, but I shoot RAW files so I'm mainly trying to bring it back to what I saw...plus a little.

In my camera bag

I tend to travel light partially because this stuff is heavy and also because this is my hobby and I haven't been able to justify spending a lot on high end gear. I have a nifty fifty, My Tamron 17-50 2.8 and a 55-250 kit lens. I usually have my tripos available if needed, but not in my bag. I recently purchased a speed light and macro extension tubes that I'm looking forward to learning.

Feedback

I would recommend checking out an area of interest at different times of day. The lighting and shadows can create a whole different mood at different times. I also try to shoot the scene from different angles trying to find specific elements to focus on. And shoot LOTS of pictures you never really know what you have til you get it on your computer screen.
