Behind The Lens

Location

I found this butterfly on milkweed that grows in a small clearing in the woods in East TX. The milkweed grow a little over knee-high and are frequented by all sorts of insects.

Time

Late afternoon. The sun was still on the milkweed and butterflies still active.

Lighting

Available light.

Equipment

It is one of my first pics with what was then my new Canon EOS Rebel 2Ti and 60mm micro lens. f/5.6; shutter speed 125. Handheld. I have now added Canon EOS 7D, and Canon EOS 5D Mk IV and 100-400 lens. Enjoy shooting with all of them, depending on the situation.

Inspiration

I love nature photography and find butterflies both fun and challenging.

Editing

Shot in RAW; cropped and increased saturation a bit. Sharpened and noise reduction. Standard processing really.

In my camera bag

I usually have a couple of lens and maybe a polarizing filter Extra battery and card. Sometimes, a speed-lite...depending on what I plan to shoot. Always carry a tripod and remote shutter control.

Feedback

Wildlife photography requires a lot of patience and knowledge of your subject. Observe when the animal, or bug, is most active; determine what kind of lighting you will have, but most importantly ... always have your camera handy . You never know when something will just show up right in front of you!
