Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Saarbrücken, Germany while I was out for a walk with my friend Dennis.

Time

It was just before sunset on the evening before my birthday. We planned to go out for a celebratory drink, but decided to wander down by the river first to catch the last of the sunshine. It was October, so we were getting a bit cold, and were just heading back when I took this picture.

Lighting

The natural lighting was actually what prompted me to take this photo. It was dark in the tunnel, and I liked how the daylight from outside leaked in through the opening, giving the photo a really cool atmosphere and drawing attention to my subject.

Equipment

This photo was actually taken using my Nikon D5100 in auto mode! Since it was a very spontaneous opportunistic shot, I had no time to change the settings. I saw the picture happening, and just flicked the camera onto auto and hoped for the best. In this case, it paid off to worry less about the technical side in order to catch the perfect moment.

Inspiration

I had actually stopped in the tunnel to take a picture of the graffiti on the wall, so my friend walked off ahead. As I looked up, I saw Dennis silhouetted perfectly against the opening of the tunnel, and started shooting. I only had time to take three photos before he left the tunnel, and luckily there was one where he was in the dead centre of the frame.

Editing

I didn't really do much post-processing on this one. As soon as I saw the picture in camera, I knew that I wanted to make it black and white, though. Apart from that, I just played with the contrast a bit to really emphasize the silhouette, and highlight the illuminated graffiti.

In my camera bag

On a normal day, I don't really carry much equipment around with me. Most of the time I'm shooting with a 35mm 1.8 on my Nikon D5100. It's my favourite lens, because I like that it's versatile, and allows me to shoot indoors and in low light. If I'm shooting portraits, I'll often take my 85mm 1.8 along too, but I really like the freedom of travelling light, and the challenge of working with what I have.

Feedback

My favourite pictures are always the ones that I wasn't expecting to take, so my advice would be to always have a camera handy. Even if you're not going to a fancy location, or doing anything exciting, you never know when a photo opportunity is going to come up. Keep your eyes open for interesting subjects and unusual patterns of light, and try not to get too bogged down with making sure that everything is technically perfect.
