Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a greenhouse of a floriculturist friend.

Time

Early morning hours around 5:30-6:30am when dewdrops are abound on grasses and stem of flowers.

Lighting

I always like natural lighting or any availabe light on my photos. A ray of light was diffused through a tiny hole of a leaf above the subject slightly angled and was bounced back to the flower.

Equipment

I shot this photo with a canon eos rebel SL1 with a canon ef100mm f2.8 macro.Used some series and variations with a magnifying glass, hand held and with a tripod.

Inspiration

By chance I was invited to see this greenhouse and was amazed with all this beautifully arranged well kept environment. Well enough the photogapher in me was playing some compositions ,angle ,lighting colors as I begun touring the place and return on another day.

Editing

When shooting macros post processing is a tedious process clarity, sharpness ,depth of color balance will always come to play. With this photo I come up with a hundred more exposures and use some focus stacking.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a variable ND filter and a 28 -80mm lens

Feedback

I shot this photo with a magnifying glass on one hand moving closer and backing up to get a good focus on the reflection also set up the camera remotely on continous shooting mode.To bring out color and detail I used a shallow depth of field f2.8 S priority mode at ISO 100 as a starting point and setting the camera in various focusing into the dewdrop and stem.Using the available light diffusing it by a nearby leaf with a tiny hole and bounce back to the flower using a cardboard. For me keeping your close up image simple can give you the most beautifuly and dramatic results.Patience and persistence will pay off.Good depth of field and isolating your subject are the most important to remember.
