Location
This tiny iceberg was floating within a few feet of the beach, in Sainte-Anne-Des-Monts Quebec Canada, along the shores of the mighty Saint-LawrenceTime
This photo was taken at 6pm, just as the Sun had fallen below the horizon, on February 26th 2013.Lighting
This natural ice sculpture was created from the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence partially freezing, then a storm came and broke up the shore ice, leaving the shoreline peppered with chunks of ice and snow of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Then the tides took most of them away, and those that stayed behind were further sculpted by the waves, the tides and the heat of the Sun. Although the temperature was way below freezing, the water still flowed, as it is salt water and stays fluid at very low temperatures. As I walked along the shore, my eye was immediately drawn to this amazing piece. It reminds me of a viking ship, and some people have told me that the left end of it looks like a whale's tail. I must say that as the next tide came in, this piece floated away, and this was a very unique moment in time. As for the sky and its colors, the setting sun had painted the sea in these incredible hues and tones.Equipment
I used a Kodak DX-7590 (body and fixed lens), hand-held and natural lighting... while wearing heavy gloves with flip up fingers, due to the extreme cold, I was also wearing heavy Winter clothing with many layers.Inspiration
The shape and position of this particular piece of floating ice stopped me in my tracks, as I walked the shoreline. I then found a position that would highlight its shape and include the incredible colors on the sea.Editing
I did very minor adjustments in post-processing, using photoscape (free software), making sure to keep the image as real as I could. I simply adjusted the tilt of the photo and did some mild cropping. In my camera bag
At the time, all I had with me , was my Kodak DX-7590, with spare battery. Since then, I have added a Coolpix L830. Both cameras have fixed lenses and all I add to the bag is spare batteriesFeedback
Do not be afraid to go out when the conditions are not favorable, just make sure to dress for the occasion. On this outing, I wore multiple layers, plus a complete snowsuit, gloves and mitts (with flip-up fingers)
