Pripyat was completed in 1970 to house the workers and their families at the Chernobyl plant. In 1986 the nuclear reactor suffered a meltdown and three days later the inhabitants of Pripyat were evacuated. They were told they would return soon. However, it is believed the city will remain uninhabitable for 20,000 years owing to the extent of the radioactive contamination.
