Glad you like it! It was a case of being in the right place at the right time, with a camera in my hand.

Location
Rockaway Beach, Pacifica, California.Time

The moment captured in the photo is just after a 3-day storm had ended. The air is heavily laden with water vapor, and the sunbeams are just breaking through the overcast on the left of the image. The moisture in the air is serving to delineate the sun's rays, adding to the drama of the scene.Equipment
Canon EOS 40D, hand-held, UV filter, with a 300mm Canon EF 70-300mm zoom, at full zoom. Shutter Speed: 1/640; ISO 100; aperture value: f9.Inspiration
After 3 days of rain, 2 of which we were without power, just being able to go outside with my camera was such a treat! But when I walked around the building and saw the incredible violence of the surf, the frustrated gulls who could not land to feast on all of the food the storm had brought to shore, and the golden light, with rays piecing through the gloom, as a photographer, I had no choice but to start shooting! I had never seen anything like this, and I'm just happy that I was there, camera-ready.Editing
Cropping, only.In my camera bag
I carry three lenses, all Canon: EFS 18-135mm with image stabilizer (normally mounted on my Canon 60D); EFS 10-22mm; and the EF 70-300mm. I use SanDisk Extreme memory cards (the faster the better). I have hoods for all three lenses, extra battery packs, micro fiber lens cloth, a squeeze air puff for dust removal from the mirror, a small led flashlight, a Polaroid filter case with various filters, a Pixel RW-221RX Wireless Remote, a Yongnuo YN560-III digital flash, a pen and small pad, and the user's manual for the camera.Feedback
Nature offers dramatic scenes that are often ready-made for a photographer, but the best opportunities come when weather is changing, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon, either just before or just after a storm, when sunlight, wind and clouds are all dancing together. Always have your batteries charged, your equipment in top working condition, extra batteries and extra memory cards, and - as simple as it sounds - check the weather on a regular basis by accessing weather reports, and by going outside. Look at the color and direction of the light, and go to a spot that has a panoramic view. Be spontaneous!
