Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home town. I live in a little fishing village on the north east coast of Scotland, where the sea is only ever a short walk away.

Time

This photo was taken as the sun was going down over my sleepy village, during July of 2014. I'd just gone for a long walk along the beach, breathing in the fresh air and watching the sun set on the ocean. Heading back to my house I spotted the seagull resting on a roof, perfectly illuminated by the last light of the sun.

Lighting

I love the colour of sunsets: the rich oranges that they send into the sky. I feel this picture captures the warmth of the summer night, while providing a contrasting background to the almost silhouette of the seagull.

Equipment

I used nothing other than my SONY DSC-HX200V camera, focal length 143.3 mm and shutter speed 1/320 sec.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the warmth of the night, alongside the fresh, natural feel of the sea air and the life it supports, represented here by the seagull.

Editing

No processing at all.

In my camera bag

The only thing I carry is my SONY DSC-HX200V camera. I normally find objects around me if I need a steady support, otherwise I just use the flat of my hand.

Feedback

Just keep your eyes open for opportunities. There is very little to do in my small village, but photographic opportunities are all around if you look hard enough for them. Play around with different angles, and take photos at different times of the day to see what lighting exposure works best for the type of photograph you want to capture. And remember to be patient! Some opportunities take time to come around.
