Location
It was taken near the city a Dahuk, Kurdistan. A few miles from what is now the center of the Peshmerga's base of operation. I was a Private security contractor working in the mountains near by.Time
This was my last morning in Kurdistan. My flight out was at 0900 so I had the whole morning to myself. All my gear was packed so I was forced so shoot handheld. It was around 0530 and bitter cold, I remember thinking "This will never turn out I'm shaking too bad."Lighting
The amazing thing about this morning was that that normally the view was hazy. But because of how unusually cold it was the haze was forced up and caused those beautiful rays of sunshine. You could feel each one of them, warming you deep into the soulEquipment
I was shooting with my 5D mkIII with my 70-200/f2.8 IS USM II handheld.Inspiration
That was an extremely unforgiving deployment emotionally. The kind that sticks with you. I was laying on the hood of the truck with my hat over my eyes when the first ray managed to poke thru and warm my face. The sun had began to crest the hill. I knew it was the last time I would see that place and I wanted to remember something, anything better than the previous 90 days. This shot is what came out. And no, it doesn't helpEditing
Minimal post. Some white balance and exposure comp.In my camera bag
I load up my Pelican S140 with my iPad Air linked Eye Fi Sd card. Canon 5D MkIII, Speedlite 430 ex II , 24-70/f4 IS USM , 70-200/f 2.8 IS USM II and my trusty mefoto globetrotter tripod.Feedback
The key is in the clouds. Keep the iso low and the cooler the weather the better.
