Location
In Avon, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.Time
We were a group of friends enjoying the surf, right by our rental property. Cold beers and lunch beckoned around midday. I had been taking some pics of the ocean scenery, when my friend Judith collected a few things and started making her way to the beach house. This pic was taken on 2014-08-25 at 12:22:42.Lighting
Midday sun is unforgiving. It's not my favorite shooting time of day, unless I'm searching for harsh shadows. In this instance, I enjoy the quality of direct light. It gives the image a very real beachy feel that conveys the heat in those last days of summer.Equipment
This image was shot with Nikon D40x at 55mm f/9 1/320sec ISO 100.Inspiration
I was looking to shoot some images evocative of the beach and North Carolina before heading back home to Canada. The last days were stretched and stretched as long as possible to enjoy the few moments of summer left, before work and school resumed. This shot evokes the bitter sweet feeling near the end of our beach holiday.Editing
To give it that moody look I was after, I created two curves adjustments and toned down the vibrance. In my camera bag
Depending on the subject at hand, I will usually have my Nikon D810 or Nikon D500 with my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 or Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8. Extra batteries, cards and a speedlight.Feedback
Always be prepared. Whenever you go out with camera in hand be prepared to shoot whatever presents itself to you. Shoot what you came for, but be on the lookout for the unexpected. When lighting, composition and emotion come together, you have the "decisive moment"!
