Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in the defunct Matarazzo Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil.

Time

I took this photo right around mid-day on October 1, 2014.

Lighting

October is springtime in Brazil. The sky was incredibly clear that day, which you can only really count on during this time of year, as the city is usually quite rainy during other months. The skylights above the staircase allowed all of this light to come through in such a way to illuminate this staircase so beautifully.

Equipment

I took this photo with a Canon Rebel T3i, using an 18-55mm Canon lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The light and grandeur of the architectural details stopped me cold in my tracks. I spent hours exploring this massive building and this staircase really seemed as though it were meant to be a center piece for the architects vision. This hospital was originally designed and built for the sole purpose of providing quality care in a magnificent space for the cities poor community. The passion that was poured into this project can't be seen more vividly than at the foot of these stairs and in the beautiful light provided by the strategic placement of skylights above it. This was meant to be seen and over 100 years later, it still stood, though well worn, meant to be photographed.

Editing

I brought out the details and lightening in Photoshop using the Dark Contrasts filter of Color EFEX Pro 4.

In my camera bag

Since I'm first and foremost a street photographer, I usually only carrying with me a Canon EOS M, 18-55mm lens and my LG camera phone. On days like this one in particular however, when I'm shooting in a more controlled environment, or when I'm not shooting candid photos, I'm carrying my Canon Rebel T3i with my basic 18-55mm lens.

Feedback

Take your time with the lightening and composition. The only light that I had to work with here was natural and given the limitations of my equipment, I really had to try and maximize what little light I did have to work with. The composition was also a little tricky too since the staircase did not sit perfectly centered with the walls that surrounded it, I had to really consider what the most important lines would be and where the eye should ultimately lead. I let the walls remain uneven to the eye and focused on centering the square in the middle of the top landing wall. This also allowed me to capture some of the gorgeous detail along the railing while I kept the base of the staircase centered, straight and away from being a visual distraction.
