I watched these baby squirrels playing while on a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Note that you can count 5 tails... I just couldn't get the entire 5 in the frame at the same time :-)

Location
The photo was taken on Horseshoe Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness which is in northern Minnesota.Time
I shot this image in the early evening.Lighting
I really liked the warmer tones of the evening light.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 5D Mark II camera with 100-400mm lens on a Gitzo 2531 tripod with the RRS BH40 ball head. No fill flash was used.Inspiration
Three of us had gone on a wilderness canoe trip and had made camp a few hours earlier. The other 2 guys decided to go fishing and I stayed in camp. While in camp this family of young squirrels were having a ball, chasing each other around the tree. I wanted to catch all 5 of the youngsters in a single frame, but after about 80 frames I still didn't quite get the perfect shot. If you look closely, you will see 4 squirrells but 5 tails :-)Editing
I shoot RAW and post process in Lightroom. I didn't do anything unusual, other than some shadow/ highlight control. Also I believe I added a little vignetting around the outside of the frame to de-emphasize some of the tree structure and lead the eye to the squirrels. In my camera bag
My bag is an F-Stop gear Loka. I usually carry my DSLR body (now a Canon 5D Mark III) 17-40L, 24-105L, 100-400L) I also carry a 420EX flash, a 22 inch reflector and a lot of compact flash.Feedback
Other than a sturdy tripod and the correct focal length lens to fill the frame, I would have to say take lots of images... this is a low percentage endeavor! Even though there were a couple shots where I captured all 5 squirrells, I didn't find any of them as interesting as this one.
