Unlike most shorebirds, the Inland Dotterel, as its name suggests, mainly occurs away from the coast, except at a few places, such as the Eyre Peninsula, the southern Nullarbor Plain, and parts of the Pilbara, where arid and semi-arid habitats occur near the sea. Instead of mudflats and wetlands, Inland Dotterels inhabit dry, flat, open landscapes, such as stony gibber plains, claypans and gravel flats, usually with some sparse, stunted saltbush or bluebush. In these harsh environments they forage for seeds by day and insects at night.
