Location
This photo was taken on a sultry afternoon in New Orleans, Louisiana, as we strolled around the French Quarter during a vacation.Time
Memories of New Orleans tend to get a little fuzzy, but it was sometime after noon.Lighting
The tiny lights had everything to do with what inspired me to shoot this image. The courtyard of this cafe was smoky, and the tiny white lights seemed to invite the passerby into another mindset.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon T1i and recently acquired Lensbaby Spark.Inspiration
I had won the Lensbaby in a photo contest. Until then, I didn't know what tilt-shift meant, but once I got the lens, I was capable of getting the results I was always trying to get but couldn't figure out how. New Orleans is really the city of inspiration, so I couldn't imagine a better place to experiment. The tiny lights and smoky background were all the inspiration I needed right then.Editing
Initially, I shot this in black & white, thinking that the contrast between the lights and the smoke would be more dramatic. Tilt-shift doesn't lend itself to sharp images, however. I felt so connected to the image as a story, though, so I looked at it in color, and saw how it had this vibrancy mixed with a sense of the familiar. I switched the image from black & white to color and adjusted the contrast and saturation. That's all.In my camera bag
My Canon T1 I, Pentax v:-P K1000, Lensbaby Spark and fixed 49mm-1:7 lenses and Holga TLR, tower flash.Feedback
Shoot with the lowest ISO you can get away with. Don't turn your camera off. Don't chimp! And don't let fear get in the way of capturing a moment in time...your perspective is unique and has a place in the world.
